OK, so you’re happy with your newly-built website and you’re ready to launch it to the world. It’s time to open the doors and watch the masses roll in, right? Not necessarily… there’s a few extra things you need to do to ensure your website doesn’t get lost in all the others out there.
Meta tags Meta tags are information that is inserted in your site’s code that is only visible to search engines. It explains what your site is about, provides a list of your keywords and describes how this page should be indexed. For example, if you had a ‘Download’ page of your products you don’t want search engines to be indexing this page and giving access to anyone.
Keywords Keyword phrases are often overlooked when building a new website, but they are an important part of the search engine optimisation process. First of all you need to understand what your users will be searching for – check out these great tips in Keyword research: the intent behind a search.
Exchanging links For your site to climb up in the rankings, you need to have good quality backlinks to your site. This is something that will require constant maintenance and attention. It’s a little difficult at first to attract others to link to your site, especially when quality links are more important than numerous meaningless links. For some ideas on how to attract links to your site see How can I use other websites to improve my rankings in Google?
Submit your xml sitemap to Google To get your site indexed quickly it’s advisable that you create a xml sitemap for Google . Sometimes it could be up to six weeks between crawls – if you submit your sitemap to Google you’ll be crawled within a matter of hours. For more detailed information on how to do this, check out this article on How to set up a Google XML sitemap.
If you implement these few strategies before opening up your website’s doors (so to speak), you’ll have traffic walking through in no time. |
