Anyone interested in SEO knows that links are in integral part of a website’s strategy to achieve high rankings in search engines as well as traffic to your site. This article looks at the two types of links you can get to your site... one-way links and reciprocal links.
One-way or non-reciprocal linking As the name would suggest, one-way linking is when you get a link from another website and do not provide a reciprocal link back to theirs. So how do you get a link from someone else’s website? There are basically two ways of doing this – through articles and directories.
- Write articles. As you’ve probably heard many times, content is king. Content will always be the main driving force behind any website, as most users are more interested in the information they can get from you rather than anything else. If you write good quality articles that are relevant to others, people who are interested in what you have to say are likely to add a link to your article, or include your article on their site with a link to yours at the bottom.
When this happens you’ll have a genuine link from a relevant website, and this will be rewarded by search engines, as they favour sites with a high level of relevancy. Also, the link will be one-way to your site, which has more weight than if you were to provide a reciprocal link.
- Directories. This is definitely the easiest method, as all you need to do is submit your website’s link to a particular category. You’ll have a permanent inbound link going to your site, and what’s even better is a lot of the directories out there are free. Your traffic may also increase as these directories send traffic to your site.
Reciprocal link building This method of link building is certainly more hassle for everyone involved. Usually, you need to make sure you add their link to your website before they will add yours – or vice versa. Often your link request will be ignored or denied, particularly if the website you’re approaching is well established. However, reciprocal link building can be very successful, so here’s a couple of strategies to help you along:-
- Approach relevant websites for links. If you sell fashion online, consider approaching sites that sell accessories or shoes, or a womens blog or similar site. Remember that search engines are after relevancy, and in addition, these types of quality links will be more useful for your users.
- Ignore page rank. We all want to associate ourselves with similar websites with a good Page Rank. But if you’re just starting out in your link building campaign, it’s likely your requests for links will be rejected quite often. Try and settle for sites with a lesser Page Rank but with quality information. This will hold more relevancy with the search engines.
