Q:  "My problem is when I check my website's pages in Google using the site operator it shows me my homepage but instead of any description text it shows me the menu items. Can you give me a tip as to how I can avoid this problem?"

Hi Rod,

There could be a couple of reasons why search engines are displaying your menu items as the description information:-

1. The menu items are the first piece of text on the page
Search engines will sometimes display the first piece of text on a page if there isn't a description tag for that page. This is typically the case if you have a flat file html website as opposed to laying out your website through CSS.

Essentially this means if you look at the code of your site the first readable content is the menu structure hence why search engines display this as the description.

You could consider re-developing your menu structure using CSS and positioning this below your body content.

2. There's no description tag
Ensure that every page has a description tag on your site. This will ensure that you control what gets displayed in the search engines results page.

These are the two main reasons why your site would be displaying this information.
